Vivienne Westwood’s Spring 1985 collection marked the end of her five-year ‘New Romantic’ era and the start of her independence from Malcolm McLaren, cementing her place as a designer in her own right.
The Mini-Crini Collection
Titled Mini-Crini, the collection fused two opposing references: the liberating 1960s mini skirt and the rigid crinoline of the 18th and 19th centuries. Westwood both mocked and reimagined these extremes, creating a silhouette that was shorter, sharper, and far more fitted than her earlier work. She described this shift as a “cardinal change,” marking one of her first deep dives into historical costume — a theme she would explore again and again.
The Iconic Star Print
Among the collection’s standout details was the star print, a bold, scattered motif that playfully disrupted the formality of the crinoline silhouette. Originally seen across skirts and dresses, it perfectly showcased Westwood’s talent for blending historical references with pop culture energy.
We’re excited to share a rare pair of star print jeans — a wearable piece of fashion history from this landmark collection.
